The Promise: The Making of 'Darkness On The Edge Of Town', takes the viewer into the studio with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for the recording of their fourth album. The documentary features never before seen footage of home rehearsals and recording sessions. It captures Springsteen's creative process during the era from 1976 to 1978.

While Bruce achieved fame for the previous album, Born To Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town was a departure in style that seems to have driven the rest of his career. Some of the lyrics of the title song seem to sum it all up:

Tonight I'll be on that hill 'cause I can't stop
I'll be on that hill with everything I got
Lives on the line where dreams are found and lost
I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost
For wanting things that can only be found
In the darkness on the edge of town

For the recording, the hill could be the studio. And, for anyone who's ever seen Bruce live, the hill is definitely the stage. Do yourself a favor and see this film. It's required viewing for any disciple of Rock 'N' Roll.
