RUDY'S LOSS - AMERICA'S GAIN

Since I dedicated yesterday's entries to John Edwards' suspension of his presidential bid, I did not take the time to comment on the positive event of the day. RUDY IS DONE!!!

Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York has stopped his presidential campaign. Giuliani, who for all but about 10 days immediately following 9/11, was one of the least loved mayors in the history of the city.

He never defined his vision for why he wanted to be president. Senator Joe Biden said it best when he said that Giuliani's sentences on the campaign trail consisted of "a noun, a verb and 9/11".

Had he actually become the nominee, he certainly would have faced two important questions:

1. Since you claim to be an expert on terrorism, and since it is fairly common knowledge that terrorists return to finish the job they started, why did you place the emergency command center for the city in the trade center after it had suffered an attack by terrorists in 1983?

2. In your campaign you frequently speak of lower taxes and increasing the size of the military. This is a similar tactic that you used in New York by increasing law enforcement spending while lowering taxes. On the surface this is a great combination, but wouldn't it be more appropriate to pay for the extra expenditures before providing tax breaks? After all, the result of your plan in New York City was the need for Mike Bloomberg, your successor, to raise property taxes by 18% to cover the shortfall.

So, as I see it his lose is our gain. Good riddance!!!

Here's an entry from Joel Achenbach's ACHENBLOG that address the difference between the Edwards and Giuliani campaigns.
